PDP flays Fashola’s refusal to conduct council election

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday described the Governor Babatunde Fashola-led government of Lagos State as a bad model of democratic governance.

The party said this in reaction to the refusal of the state government, controlled by the All Progressives Congress, to conduct local government elections this year according to schedule.

The tenure of the current local council executives would expire on October 29, before which the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission ought to conduct elections for chairmanship and councillorship across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas in the state.

However, based on prevailing evidence, there seems to be no preparation towards such elections by LASIEC.

Lagos PDP, in a statement by its publicity secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, on Thursday, said it would take appropriate steps in protest at the expiration of the present councils’ tenure by October 29.

The party added that the APC-led government refused to conduct council elections for fear of losing at the polls.

It said, “We are disappointed in Governor Fashola, the Lagos State House of Assembly and LASIEC for becoming very undemocratic and for their inability to accommodate opposition and allow fair competition.

“Imagine (the APC) shying away from local government elections and consequently depriving the electorate the right to choose their local government representatives. We are studying the trend and will surely swing into action at the expiration of the present councils’ term on 29th day of this month.”

Lagos PDP also vowed to repel all attempts by the APC to provoke its members in the state, stating that it had observed that Lagos government officials had been removing and destroying PDP signs and symbols across the state.

When contacted the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, told our correspondent that he would send the party’s response by email but did not do so as of press time.
