2015: INEC reschedules distribution of voters’ cards in 7 states

In its efforts to address the complaints arising from inability of eligible voters to register or obtain voter cards ahead of the 2015 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, announced the rescheduling of the ongoing exercises in seven states of the country.
According to the commission, the production of Permanent Voter Cards and preparation for Continuous Voter Registration will take place in six states and remaining nine LGs in Lagos State, where the exercise has not taken place.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said the decision was reached after a meeting with leaders of 22 registered political parties from Niger, Katsina, Rivers, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Borno as well as nine LGs in Lagos State that were left out in the recently concluded third phase of the programme.
“At the meeting with political party leaders, the commission presented a progress report on the production of PVCs and explained lingering challenges necessitating a readjustment in the previously announced schedule for distribution of the cards and CVR in the outstanding states”, the statement said.
To ensure effective distribution of PVCs and mitigate difficulties encountered in the previous phases, INEC rescheduled the exercises to hold as follows:
In Rivers and Nasarawa states and remaining nine LGs in Lagos PVC Distribution has been slated for between Friday, November 28 and Sunday, November 30 2014 while CVR will take place between Wednesday, December 3 and Monday, December 8 2014.

N'Assembly drama: Senate sets up panel to probe IG of Police

The IG of Police Sulaiman Abba was invited by the House yesterday to explain why his men invaded the National Assembly last week Thursday but after the meeting abruptly ended over the IG's refusal to properly address Speaker Tambuwal, the Senate has now set up a committee to probe IGP Abba and other policemen involved in the siege.

A seven-member committee has been set up to probe the action of the police on that day and the committee have been given seven days to have those behind it brought to book.

Members of the panel include Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who will act as chairman, Abubakar Bagudu, Victor Lar, Adegbenga Kaka, Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, Mohammed Jibrilla Bindowo, and Ehigie Uzamere.
"We are appointing members from this House and we are not bringing anybody from outside and nobody is going to interfere in the work of the committee. We want them to be very thorough, we want them to be very sincere and we want them also to bring the report as quickly as possible.” Senate president David Mark said
"That act was unconstitutional, criminal, deliberate and intended to tell us that we are not what we are or what we called ourselves.Where are the privileges of the National Assembly? Can this action be contemplated in South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon or even Mali that is close by? It is impunity of the highest order and we must act and very seriously to do justice to this issue in order to restore the dignity and sanctity of the National Assembly.” - Senate Minority Leader, George Akume said.

Can’t Afford a Range Rover Evoque? The Landwind X7 Clone is Four Times Cheaper

Remember the patent images of the Range Rover
Evoque Chinese copy, the Landwind X7 ?
Well, fresh spy shots of the SUV have appeared
recently and it seems the Chinese are not bothered at
all with the reactions their copy has provoked.
That’s because the final product looks exactly like the
car in the patent photos – i.e. almost identical to the
Range Rover Evoque.

See pix after the cut

And that’s not all; since the X7
is expected to arrive in dealerships later this month, it
means it will beat the real Chinese -made Range Rover
Evoque to the market by at least two months!
The cabin is also inspired by the Evoque’s, although
the Chinese manifested more restraint in copying the
interior and put in a little more effort to differentiate it
from the original.
The Landwind X7 will be priced from 120,000 yuan,
which is the equivalent of about $19,500. That makes
it a lot cheaper than the imported Range Rover
Evoque, which starts at 528,000 yuan ($85,665) in
China. The locally made Evoque will be priced from
425,000 yuan when it launches later this year.
Based on a shortened variant of the platform that also
underpins the Landwind X8, the Evoque clone is
powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
petrol engine producing 190hp and 250Nm (184 lb-ft)
of torque, offered with either a six-speed manual or an
eight-speed automatic.

Copy cats: Chinese car company unveils $22,000 copy of Range Rover

China is at it again. 'Copy cats' (no say I talk ooo).
Anyway, UK giant car company Jaguar Land Rover is furious after a relatively unknown Chinese car company called LandWind unveiled a car that looked almost exactly like the Range Rover E-vogue which at $22,000 cost $48,000 less than the Evogue which is about $70,000. Pictured below, left is the Evogue and to the right is the Chinese car. It was launched at a motor show in China last week.

Jaguar Land Rover say they may take legal action against the company. Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth told Autocar magazine:
‘The fact that this kind of copying is ongoing in China is very disappointing. The intellectual property (IP) is owned by Jaguar Land Rover and if you break that IP then you are in breach of international regulations.’

Cross River PDP secretariat hit by explosion

The Cross River State secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP along Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar, the state capital was hit by a loud explosion suspected to be from a bomb blast this morning.

The incident, which occurred at about 5.30am on Monday also affected several buildings within the vicinity.

The Cross Rivers State chapter of the PDP is conducting a rerun of its ward congresses today

The Punch reports that as at 6.30 am this morning, there was a high presence of heavily armed policemen and soldiers who barred taking of pictures.

The secretariat had been under lock and key since controversies started trailing the conduct of the November 1 ward delegates election.

However, one of the residents of the area, Joel Ogunlana, said he felt the effect of the blast in his building which is 300 metres away.

“I heard a loud bang and everywhere started shaking. I thought the house was going to collapse,” he said.

In the compound that shares the same fence with the secretariat from behind, several glass doors and windows were shattered.

Confirming the incident, the state chairman of the party, Mr John Okon, said “I understand they threw in a bomb or dynamite or something. The police are there and the anti-bomb squad are on the way. We would not be able to use the secretariat for the ward congresses. We would be using the Presidential Lodge. All the electoral officers are collecting their materials and going to the field. The windows and other things inside the office were destroyed.”

A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Hogan Bassey, read, “Early today, 24th November at about 0535 hours, hoodlums who were unable to penetrate the heavily fortified secretariat by officers and men of the Command threw an explosive device from behind the premises into the building. The explosion only shattered some louvers on the ground floor. No life was lost and nobody sustained injury.”

Photos: UNICAL Economics lecturer allegedly stabs student in the eye

A student of Computer Science Department of University of Calabar name withheld almost lost his sight after a lecturer known as Chris Otu in the Department of Economics, University of Calabar stabbed him with his-car key during lecture hour.
According to an eye-withness Mr Otu was supposed to have a class with year 3 students of Computer Science Department by 10.am, today 21 Nov. but he failed to appear after keeping the students waiting for two hours, he later appeared by 12-noon.

After the lecturer's arrival, the waiting students assembled themselves at the lecture venue New CES building room 7 behind Unical Library.

The victimized student who is the lecturer's class rep. took white board markers to the lecturer (Mr. Otu) which is a regular routine in various Universities in Nigeria. But the lecturer for no reason premeditatedly used a book in his hand to hit the student on his head and as if that was not enough, he stabbed him with his car key and walked him out of the class.
The injury was bleeding profusely when the lecturer who felt zero remorse told the injured student and other students in the class to go and ask around who he is.
Mr Chris Otu who lost one of his eyes during a battle is believed to be an ex-cultist and because this is Nigeria, he claims nothing can be done to him.

Now, they decided to take the case to the media. Hope the university authority will look into this...

Which Police? Which Politicians? Which Democracy?

Which Police? Which Politicians? For which Democracy?

I weep.

It is unbecoming of a true democracy to have the Inspector General cordon off the National Assembly from the legislators who are the representative of the people. It is undemocratic and an act typical of a military take over in a coup maneuver.

Is this the IG that is expected to ensure the safe guard of lives and property as well as the security of the votes of the electorates in the forth coming 2015 general elections? I very well doubt this. I doubt the possibility of the discharge of any such role. If a thing like this can happen to our legislators who's got all the legislative powers and governmental reputation and apparatus in their favor and upon whom the larger responsibility to advance the course of our slow pacing young and fragile democracy is saddled then much worse can happen to a common man who's only weapon of defense is his 'voter card'. This IG would "ok" the onslaught of Nigerians without any recourse or remorse.

No doubt it is ugly to have had these hungry and greedy politicians scale the fence the way they did. I would have expected that they would have implored their legislative powers, abilities and roles (though outside the assembly) in dealing with the matter rather than displaying thier athletic prowess and dexterity on our national symbol of democratic liberation even at the glare of the whole world. So shameful. But worse still is the unthinkable and cantankerous pejorative act by the men of the police force under the instructions of the IG, not only to shut the gates of the National Assembly but also fire tear gas at the law makers. One wonders then which laws is the IG protecting when these are the people making the laws for which he is functioning.

Nigeria is in trouble. While, armed with only our pen, paper and cameras, we (journalists) are trying to 'write out' the gluttonous politicians with selfish individualistic agenda from governing us and projecting the good of our people to world in a bid to redeeming our already bastardised image we are ridiculed and  reduced to mere caricature and scare - crow of a shadowy democracy. Really, who do we turn to? Chai!! I lament for Nigeria.

Read full text of Oshiomhole's statement that got Fayose mad

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Peter Okhiria, Governor Adams Oshiomhole said;
“We find it utterly laughable and as the height of political childishness for the Ekiti State Governor to hide behind his media aides and seek to drag the name of the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, into his crude gangster tactics which he has re-introduced into Ekiti politics less than two months after assuming office.
“If the Ekiti Governor is too lazy to read and too politically illiterate to know what is happening in Edo State House of Assembly, we expected his psychedelic media aides to simply shut their loud mouths rather than behave like capering neophytes." Continue..
“For the purpose of education, the Ekiti Governor and his media aides should be informed that there is no crisis in Edo State House of Assembly. Fifteen members of the 24-member Assembly are members of the All Progressives Congress, while nine are members of the opposition PDP. Of the nine PDP members, three are on suspension while the seat of one member has been declared vacant. So, effectively, the PDP has five members in the Edo State House of Assembly.
“Even a kindergarten knows that 15 is greater than 5. So if five PDP members decide to sit with three suspended members and another whose seat was declared vacant in a chamber which is undergoing renovation, then we can at best regard that as the height of crass legislative irresponsibility".
“It is ridiculous to even contemplate that the Ekiti Governor and his media aides do not know that 15 is greater than five! For sure, they seem engrossed with their stomach infrastructure mantra, such a dubious contraption which can only be contrived by an ideologically clueless and gluttonous administration".
“But for the kind of democracy we practice in Nigeria, where the PDP promotes and condones all manners of illegalities, inanities and shenanigans which have become the second nature of that party, Ayodele Fayose would have been cooling off his heels in gaol rather than brandishing the appellation of being a Governor.
“We are thoroughly ashamed that Ekiti, hitherto known as the fountain of knowledge, is being reduced to a mindless bubble by a man running her affairs without a discernible direction like a drowning man clutching desperately at flotsam.
“We advise Fayose to restrict his gung-ho area boy tactics to Ekiti state and stop dropping the name of Governor Adams Oshiomhole to shore up his jaded image. Governance comes with decorum, respect and responsibility. If Ekiti people with all their avowed sophistication and intellectuality have elected to present a political rascal as their number one citizen, so be it; but they must understand that there is a huge difference between character and infamy"

First Ladies Battle In Public: Anambra First Lady, Slaps the Wife of the Deputy Governor!!!

The wife of Anambra State Governor, Her Excellency, Chief (Mrs.) Vickie E. Obiano Slaps the Wife of the Deputy Governor in public!!!!!!
The trouble which i learned started when on Sunday the 16th of November, after the dedication of the child of the Anglican Bishop of Awka, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Ibezim at the cathedral of St. Faith, Awka, the wife of the deputy Governor whispered into the ears of Lady Beatrice Ekwueme, wife of the former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwuene, the fact that, her principal, Mrs Obiano does not carry her along as she is supposed to.
Lady Ekwueme, thinking that the first lady was a reasonable human being, decided to approach her on the matter, trying to advice her on how best to utilize the deputy governor's wife, who, by share co-incidence, is suppose to assist her in majority of her work, if all was going on well between them.

As soon as Lady Ekwueme approached Mrs Ebele Obiano on the issue, it was learnt that she immediately flayed up, claiming that the constitution recognizes just the office of the first lady (I WONDER WHICH PART OF THE CONSTITUTION SHE READ THAT FROM) and immediately approached the deputy governor's wife, shouted at her and Mrs Ikem Okeke, shouted back at her, the first lady immediately stretched forth her hand and slapped her in the presence of what my Igbo people would call-IGWE NMADU.
In the midst of all these, the deputy governor, Dr. Ikem Okeke, who was present when the bruhaha happened, was very sad as was seen written all over his face and was immediately taken out of the venue by Sir Victor Umeh, the National Chairman of their party, The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
It would be recalled that sometime ago, this same first lady, had engaged the four time House of the Representatives Member and House Committee Chairman on Environment, Hon. Uche Uchechukwu Vero Ekwunife in a free for all fight in the presence of the First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan (Mama Peace) in far away Poland while on an official visit, for which she accompanied the First Lady to.

Stories have it that those who attend St. Gerald's Catholic Church, Ifako-Gbagada in Lagos would not be surprised at what she is displaying right now, as they say it is very natural for her to behave in these manners.

The story of how she actually became the wife of Chief Willie Obiano is for another day.

The Nigeria Police have released a statement explaining why they sent police officers to the National Assembly this morning, preventing Tambuwal and other lawmakers from gaining access into the Assembly ground. Find the statement below...

House Of Representative Members Jumping Through Fence As Tambuwal Is Denied Entry

(See pictures after the cut and watch video)

The police tried to disperse the House members with tear to no avail. About 40 members of the house shielded the speaker from the onslaught. Two aides of the speaker are said to have fainted.
